29 February—National Collegiate Rugby and The Rugger’s Edge are excited to announce a new partnership assisting young student-athletes in pursuing higher education while playing top-level collegiate rugby. All CRC ticket holders have free entry to the college sessions with The Rugger’s Edge owner and founder, Karen Fong Donoghue.
The Rugger’s Edge will be hosting multiple group sessions for high school players and parents to help educate and guide these aspiring student-athletes toward their goals of athletic recruitment, college admissions, and more. Fong Donoghue has provided similar services at various national camps as well as for a variety of State-Based Rugby Organizations with great results.
Steve Hiatt, NCR’s Vice Chair, commented, “With over 300 college coaches and 144 teams participating, the CRC presents a unique opportunity to connect high school players with college programs. We are fortunate to have Rugger's Edge on site and bring Karen's expertise to regional high school rugby players.”
The two sessions will be held at 9:30am on April 27 and 28 amongst the morning CRC matches. All families who register by April 19 will receive a 30% family discount to the CRC. The players participating in the High School tournament will also have free access to the recruiting session.
Hosting these sessions at the CRC allows for College Coaches as special guests, which will add additional insight into the process for students. With 144 men’s and women’s teams in attendance at the CRC, the event will draw over 300 coaches who will be invited to participate in the college sessions.
Fong Donoghue’s unique knowledge of the college admissions process, as well as the intricacies of the college rugby landscape, has proven highly effective, with many of her students admitted to a number of the country’s finest academic institutions and winningest collegiate rugby programs, including a number Ivy League universities and schools with national championship-winning rugby teams alongside schools that now span across the country.
"It has been too long since I have had a chance to work with the amazing contingent of student-athletes in the Mid-Atlantic area. While Zoom/remote meetings have become the norm, I know many students and families appreciate being able to meet in person. I can’t wait to continue working with families in this area and helping student-athletes prepare for life as collegiate athletes,” said Fong Donoghue.
"The CRC holds a special place in my heart. It is the gold standard for elite-level college competition and actually one of the very first national tournaments I had the honor of refereeing.”
"As much as possible, we want all students, families, and high school coaches to be able to leave the sessions with not only the athletic tools to develop into fine collegiate players but also understand the critical steps they need to take in their overall academic planning to set them up for success with all of their college applications,” remarked Fong Donoghue.
