AIC Dominant in Brown Take Down

BOYDS, Md. — American International dethroned three-time Premier Cup National Champion Brown with a dominant 24-7 upset in Sunday’s final. The win gives the Yellow Jackets the first National 7s championship in program history.

The Bears went the entire weekend without letting any team score on them, including during their semifinal win over Navy, until the final. The Bears beat Navy, 24-0, with tries from Lily Nowak, Charlotte Davies, Olivia Baptiste and Laryssa Barbosa. Conversions were kicked by Julia Murray and Caitlin Moroney.

AIC started their day with a semifinal win, 31-12, over two-seed Southern Nazarene to advance to the final. Jamaican international Naomi Dodd scored twice in the final, earning MVP honors, with help from Morgan Schechter, Venise Sanft and Kiyanah Edwards also dotting down. Three conversions were slotted by Camryn Henderson, Sanft and Edwards.

Hopes of a four-peat for Brown were shot down in the final match, with the Bears’ lone try being touched down by Baptiste, and one conversion from Murray. AIC’s Schechter and Dodd each scored tries, with SaTya Miller bagging two, as well. Henderson and Sanft assisted with the conversions, earning the Yellow Jackets their national title.

At the end of the tournament, Sereana Vulaono from New Haven kept the lead for top scorer with 12 tries and 60 points. Conversion leader was a tie between Ella Nenoff of New Haven and Brown’s Murray, both with nine each.
