Northeastern National Champs in DI Club

In the Women’s Division I Cup Final, top-seeded Northeastern, faced off against the upset-minded Iowa Hawkeyes who had beat a higher seeded team in each of their first three games. In the end, it would not be a fourth-straight stunner, as the Huskies held off Iowa 15-12 in a thrilling contest.

To advance to the final, Northeastern disposed of Northern Iowa 31-5 in the West Region. In the East Region final, the Hawkeyes upset No. 1 seed Purdue 20-7 in an all-Big Ten affair.

The Huskies opened the scoring with a try in the fourth minute, but the plucky Hawkeyes answered back with a try in the sixth minute from Elizabeth Langlois and a conversion by Miranda Basart to take a 7-5 lead. At the death of the opening half, Northeastern struck again to take a 10-7 lead at the intermission.

In the second stanza, Northeastern put the game out of reach with a try in the 13th minute. While Iowa did record a try at the death, the Huskies celebrated their National Championship with a 15-12 victory.

In other action on Sunday, Purdue took home third-place honors after a 22-12 win over Northern Iowa and the Plate travels to South Bend as Notre Dame emerged victorious following a 14-10 battle against Florida State. In the Bowl final, Boise State doubled up Claremont 24-12 and the Arizona State Sun Devils took home the Shield after upending the Howard Bison 31-5.

The leading scorer for Division I was Mia Blocher. The first-year player from Notre Dame recorded eight tries for 40 points in four games played this weekend.
